Dow Jones writer Maja Wallengren reported this morning that, “The U.S. should act swiftly to completely eliminate subsidies to cotton growers which have been ruled illegal by the World Trade Organization, or WTO, Brazil Agriculture Minister Reinhold Stephanes said late Thursday…Stephanes, speaking to Dow Jones Newswires at the end of a bilateral agricultural forum in the Mexican capital, said it was unacceptable for any country not to respect a ruling by the WTO, and Brazil expects the U.S. to act accordingly.”

Carolyn Lochhead reported in yesterday’s San Francisco Chronicle that, “Sen. Barbara Boxer said Wednesday she would not support a $250,000 limit on farmers receiving federal crop subsidies, saying it would be a disaster for the state’s cotton and rice growers.
“‘It’s not an easy issue for California,’ Boxer said. ‘We have our rice people and we have our cotton people.’”
