Farm Bill; Ag Economy; Biofuels; Trade; Budget; and USDA Issues

Farm Bill Issues

On Monday, the Red River Farm Network’s Agriculture Today Radio Program included recent remarks from Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.).  In this audio clip (MP3- 1:21), Chairwoman Stabenow remarked on the importance of economic growth, and noted that through the Farm Bill, investments can be made to help stir job creation throughout the economy.

In addition, Chairwoman Stabenow commented on the current budget situation and indicated that agriculture has already contributed $4 billion in deficit reduction last year through crop insurance cuts.

Also on Monday’s Agriculture Today Program, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) commented on the traditional rural-urban link that often takes place in Farm Bill debates: Urban lawmakers look favorably on nutrition programs that comprise the majority of Farm Bill spending, while rural lawmakers can identify with the importance of Title I commodity programs.  Sen. Klobuchar indicated that if the non-rural voting block starts “messing around too much with ag,” then programs favored by urban lawmakers will have to be examined more closely as well.  To listen to this segment of Monday’s program, just click here (MP3- 0:33).
