Farm Bill- Policy Issues

A news update yesterday from Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D., N.D.) stated that, “Before a conference committee between the Senate and House meets to reconcile the differences in their respective Farm Bills, [Sen. Heitkamp] today laid out her priorities to ensure the legislation reflects the interests of North Dakota farmers and ranchers.

“‘It is crucial that the negotiated legislation will work for North Dakota producers, and can pass in both the Senate and House,’ said Heitkamp, a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee. ‘As the Senate wrote a long-term bipartisan farm bill, I worked tirelessly to include a number of provisions to make it better for North Dakota. And I will continue to push for them as we work out a compromise farm bill. Having Senator Hoeven on the conference committee is a very good thing for our state and I believe he will be able to help protect provisions we fought together for in the Senate-passed version.’

“In a letter to the leadership of the House and Senate Agriculture Committees, Heitkamp highlighted key features of the Farm Bill that are important to include in the final version of the legislation. In particular, Heitkamp stressed the importance of policies that recognize the needs of states that experience wet seasons, take into account large counties that require farm level programs, and the necessity of the reauthorization of livestock disaster programs. Additionally, Heitkamp advocated for the inclusion of a number of research and development programs important to producers in the Upper Plains Region.”
